Memo to self:  schedule trail work for cold, windy mornings as it apparently makes the volunteers work harder!  OK, I'm just kidding around.  But today's crew of Kurt Erlandson, Ed "The Jester" Ettinghausen, Rich Arriaga, Rafael Covarrubias, Martin Santos, Jeff Coon and Matt Eyre seemed to find extra inspiration from the cool weather.  Or, maybe it was the promise of cookies and beer once we finished clearing the trail?  Gosh, even The Obliterator seemed eager to demolish more ceanothus.
We worked on the Black Oak East trail and finished up that project.  The trail is now as pretty as the proverbial picture.  Thanks to Kurt and Matt for using their vehicles to get up Middle Peak Fire Road.  Extra thanks also to Jeff Coon for hauling The Obliterator back to the truck for me.  At least by lunchtime, the sun came out so we had a nice picnic and yes, we did enjoy a nice cold beer.

See attached photo.  I've also got a short video of the crew clearing the brush that I'll post separately to the SURF Facebook page.   Thanks to everyone on the crew today.  See you at the pre-race meeting!

Despite a gloomy weather forecast, I met up this morning with Jesus Garcia-Fernandez, Hector Aleman, Treacy Sommer, Ken McIntyre and Ken Marsh at Paso Pichacho campground in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.  Our plan was to work on clearing brush on the Black Oak East trail, which is part of the SD100 course.  But, first we had to get to the trail......
Sure, it started out easy enough.  We drove past the gate at the bottom of MIlk Ranch Road and started up the hill.  The higher up we went, ...

It was a lovely spring day in the mountains.  I met up with Matthew Zuniga, Daniel Shamburg, Jeffrey Miller, Sean Nakamura and Mike Thomas at the Red Tailed Roost on Mt. Laguna.  We hiked down Thing Valley Road to access the PCT from where we left off last week.  Then it was time to fire up The Obliterator!  And off we went clearing trail over about a mile of the PCT, finishing up about .5 mile south of Dale's Soup Kitchen.  We saw several thru hikers and a covey of ultra runners doing...

It was a lovely spring morning today on Mt. Laguna.  Sunny and crisp.  Alas, a bit too sunny and crisp because the Forest Service said we could not operate power equipment today.  So, it was back to old school trail work with just hand tools.  But, did that intimidate our crew?  Of course not!
I met up with Kelsey Hausken, Daniel Griffin, Jonathan Hunter, Cesar Salas and Umberto Guerrero at the Red Tail Roost Activity Center.  We hiked over to the PCT near Burnt Rancheria campground and...

We snuck in another trail work day ahead of the next storm on Saturday March 5.  I met up with Dan Cicchelli, Beto Campos, Ryan Shaw, Chris Muller, Edward Wang and Neil Feerick at the Sunrise Picnic area on Mt. Laguna.  We hiked over the PCT, fired up The Obliterator and began working our way south clearing out the overgrowth.  In total, we cleared about 1.3 miles, which may be a new one-day record for TrailFit.  I was cutting brush as fast as my little feet would go and the crew was r...

Ah, the joys of endless summer.  No rain in sight and luckily, the USFS said it was safe enough to operate power equipment today (Friday:  no go).  So, I packed up The Obliterator, food and the usual equipment and headed up to Cibbets Flat campground to meet John Hockett, Scott Holliser, Cris Francisco, Brian Ritschel and Syvere Valentin.  We hiked up that #$%@* road to the PCT and then south on the PCT itself about a mile to the point where we left off from previous work.

Soon, I was ...

Well, I am here to tell you officially that winter must be over!  Last night I froze water in my water bottles so that I would have something nice and cold to drink while working.  I met up at the Horsethief trailhead with Stacy Fox, David Fellow, Bill Skyles, Even Goodwin, Anthony Harju and Ryan Shaw.  Due to the warm weather, the Forest Service rules would not allow us to use power equipment (even though most of our work today was not within the Pine Creek Wilderness).  So, armed wit...

Well, I guess winter is over, huh?  On Wed, I went out for a solo scouting hike 5 miles on the Secret Canyon trail from the Horsethief trailhead and it was freezing.  Ran into a big downed oak that I was able to clear using a couple of hand saws.

Today, I met at the same trailhead with Edward Wang, Greg Gayman, Tony Sandoval, Andi Ramer, Michele Pauley and Vince Villegas.  It was sunny and about 15 degrees warmer than the same time on Wed.  Go figure.
Our cheerful tribe hiked in 4 mil...

This was our first Grrrls Only trail work day and it was fabulous.  Anita and I met up at Todd's cabin with Angela Shartel, Mary Lou Lackey, Renee Drucas and Carrie Jesse.  The day was sunny with a brisk wind blowing, just about perfect for trail work.  We left behind Anita and the warmth of the cabin and headed up Todd's hill to join the PCT.  I powered up The Obliterator and we proceeded south along the trail, trimming back the new growth that has come up iin the past few years.

Hi!
Yup, we're back in business making the best trail system on the planet.  On Sunday, I met up with Alex Batchelor (coming in all the way from London!), Jay Hilton, Eric Miersma, Andrew Moulis, Nancy Moulis and Jeri Ginsburg to work on the PCT north of Kitchen Creek Road.  It was a beautiful crisp sunny winter morning so everyone was eager to get to work.
We cleared a half mile of the trail and as you can see from the photos, the trail looks great.  If all goes according to plan, with...
