We kicked off the start of the 2013-2014 trail work season with a small group of volunteers: Michele Pauley, Bryce Williams, Ken McIntyre (recently home from completing on foot the 500 mile Saint James pilgrimage in Spain!) and yours truly. We met at the Roost on Mt. Laguna and drove in on Thing Valley Road to the location of the Dale's Soup Kitchen aid station. From there, we cleared brush south about .5 mile to Big Rock, which is pretty darn good for only 4 trail workers. I've enclosed a sample before/after picture.
The weather was glorious; a crisp sunny morning. The oak trees were turning golden (see the nice photo of Michele among the oaks) and the ground was still wet and easy to work due to the recent rain. So, it was mostly the usual stuff of cutting back brush, digging out plants that were blocking the trail, etc. A great upper body workout was had by all.
Post-work, we returned to the Roost for a relaxing lunch out in the sun. I had brought a growler of Witch's Hair Pumpkin Ale from Manzanita Brewing and this was quite popular with the crew. We found it was also an excellent pairing with our Ginger-O cookies from Newman's Own.
Many thanks to our hard-working volunteers! Hope everyone is enjoying this classic fall weather.
